How to Choose the Perfect Red Shade for Fall 2024

Ah, the first official day of Autumn. Inhale with me fall girlies...the air is crisp, you have a pumpkin coffee in your hands and are comfy and cute in a sweater and boots. You have all the fall essentials except...you haven’t gotten your fall hair yet.

You could freshen up your highlights or even add some depth with subtle lowlights. Maybe you’ll get a fun, layered haircut, but...when you think of fall, you think of the trees. The colors of your favorite autumn leaves. Yes, you think. This is the year I go red. But how do you know exactly which shade is best for you?

We’ve got you covered, friend.

SKIN TONES AND THEIR FAVORITE SHADES OF RED

1. Fair Skin

If your skin ranges from pale ivory to a pinkish or peachy hue, then you’re in this camp! At your trip to the salon, you’ll want to think lighter, natural shades to avoid getting too washed out. You can’t go wrong with strawberry blonde or even copper.

2. Medium Skin

A medium skin tone is warm yellowish golden with olive undertones and could range from a pale beige, golden tan and olive to a deep copper tone. Auburn is a great choice here. The warmth and depth will give you a nice, autumn glow. Our next piece of advice? Steer clear of purple-based colors so you don’t look ashen. Overall, these skin tones can lean cool or warm.

3. Dark Skin

Dark skin is characterized by a rich, dark complexion and could range from copper and espresso tones to dark brown or ebony. Deep and dark skin can be cool, warm or neutral. For these skin tones, the deeper or brighter the shade, the better. Rich, purplish reds work great; think dark burgundy or magenta or go bold with bright or fire-engine red.

Ok, friends. You’ve got your guidelines and now it’s time to show your stylist your inspo photo. Here’s the inside scoop: if you go to your stylist and say, I want red hair that could mean so many different things, so it’s always good to bring specific inspo for them to go off of. Let’s chat trending reds –

TRENDING REDS

1. Burgundy Red

A lean to the dark side, but we’re here for it! Think wine-inspired, which will look fabulous against a golden skin tone.

2. Dimensional Auburn

Perhaps the easiest type of ginger hair to pull off, this tone is a balance between warm and cool and works across all skin tones. Great at neutralizing pink tones in fair skin, and also warming up olive and darker skin tones by making them glow.

3. Cinnamon Red

Warm copper was here years ago and will still reign strong in the years to come. A mix of red and bronze, it’s classic fall, it’s the falling leaves! And it works its magic against fair, medium and olive skin tones.

4. Cherry Cola/Black Cherry

This one is a big 2024 trend. This color is a deep red and purple tone cherry that works well on skin that tans easily and accentuates brown eyes nicely too.

5. Strawberry Blonde/Red Sand

Think forever sun kissed and natural; this color is a nice transition into the world of reds for our blonde friends. Often natural and dimensional, this natural looking shade looks great on fair skin tones.
